Last Monday, the AI MAPS team held our annual stakeholder day, bringing together a diverse group of partners, including police and municipal officials, a neighborhood concierge and industry representatives. This day was a key opportunity for us to report on our research progress, gather valuable feedback, and brainstorm new research ideas together.
First of all, a heartfelt thank you to all of our stakeholders who took the time to attend and actively contribute to the discussions. Your input is essential to the continued success of our work. A special thanks also goes to Ekaterina, who organized the entire event, ensuring it was both productive and enjoyable.
Sparking Curiosity: The Concept of 'Positive Safety'
One of the standout moments from the day was the curiosity our partners showed toward the concept of 'positive safety.' This approach emphasizes promoting positive behaviors—such as social cohesion—rather than focusing solely on repressing negative actions like crime. By fostering environments that encourage supportive and collaborative behavior within communities, we can enhance public safety in innovative and sustainable ways. The enthusiastic response from our stakeholders suggests that 'positive safety' is an area ripe for further exploration in our upcoming research projects.
Co-Creating AI Training Data: Legal and Ethical Considerations
I also had the opportunity to pitch a preliminary research topic that generated significant interest. The question I posed was: What are the legal and moral considerations for data sharing across public and private organizations to improve AI systems? In other words, can and should different organizations collaborate to co-create training data to improve AI-systems, and if so, how do we ensure clear accountability structures are in place?
The positive feedback I received reinforced that this is a crucial issue, one that resonates deeply with our stakeholders. To move this forward, my supervisors and I will be hosting a multi-stakeholder workshop on December 16, focused on training data and co-creation. More details will be shared soon, but if you're interested in joining, feel free to reach out to me at vaniersel@law.eur.nl. We warmly invite everyone with interest or (work) experience in this topic!
Wrapping up
The AI MAPS Annual Stakeholder Day was a fantastic opportunity to align our research with the needs and insights of those working in public safety. The ideas and feedback we received will not only shape the direction of our current projects but also help us identify new areas for research collaboration. Thank you once again to everyone involved for making this day a success.
Stay tuned for more updates, and don't forget to mark December 16 on your calendar for our upcoming workshop.
