On July 1st 2015 Dr. Martine Bouman will be appointed as holder of the Special Chair Entertainment Media and Social Change at ERMeCC.
Since 1999, Dr Bouman has been Scientific Director of the Center for Media & Health in Gouda and international award winner and expert in the field of Entertainment-Education.
The Special Chair Entertainment Media and Social Change wants to design and explore new communication strategies to effectively reach vulnerable groups in Dutch society and stimulate collaborative partnerships between the worlds of media, health and science. Media organizations are searching for interesting content for their productions. Health organisations want to reach their target groups more effectively. By establishing a strong collaborative partnership and creating entertainment media formats with an added value, all stakeholders can contribute to a healthier society. Scientific research has shown that narrative persuasion in storytelling media formats (the Entertainment-Education strategy) can be an effective and promising communication strategy to stimulate social discourse and self-reflection on various social issues and health topics.
The Special Chair will create and facilitate interdisciplinary research on entertainment media formats with an added value. This is especially interesting in the light of the new public broadcasting regulations in the Netherlands, which make it possible for health and social issue organisations to become more proactive players within the public broadcasting system.
The Special Chair has been established by the Netherlands Entertainment-Education Foundation and is part of the broader project MediaLab: Health for all.This MediaLab project has been made possible by a donation from the Friends Lottery in partnership with the Alzheimer Foundation, Kidney Foundation and Heart Foundation.
