Rotterdam maintains its lead ESB Top 40 Economists ranking

In the individual ranking of scientists with publications which can be related to the SDGs of the United Nations, in total 11 of the 40 economists are affiliated with Erasmus University Rotterdam.

‘Economisch Statistische Berichten’ (ESB) has adjusted its Top 40 Economists ranking into the Economists Parade. The editors continue to make an annual overview of the performance of economists but are now interpreting it differently. For the first time they have looked at the extent to which the publications of scientists can be related to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

The highest ranked scholar is Pursey Heugens of Rotterdam School of Management (3). He is closely followed by his RSM colleague Joep Cornelissen (4).  In total 7 scholars of Erasmus School of Economics can be found in this SDG relevance ranking: Patrick Verwijmeren (9), Aurélien Baillon (11), Sebastian Gryglewicz (21) Stefan Stremersch (26), Martijn Burger (31), Olivier Marie (32) and Peter Wakker (38).

According to ESB, the one-sided focus of the ESB Top 40 Economists on publications was no longer in line with current scientific developments. While the focus on international publications has undeniably increased the quality of research, there is a risk that competition in research will be at the expense of less easily quantifiable university goals such as educational quality and societal impact.

The first Economists Parade also highlights young talent who this year has secured a permanent employment contract or tenure track position (a long-term temporary contract with a view to a permanent appointment) at a Dutch economics school for the first time. Secondly, deans of schools were asked about the special valuable achievements of employees.
