Paul van Geest receives royal distinction

Paul van Geest, Professor of Theology and Economic Thought at Erasmus School of Philosophy, has been appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Van Geest received the royal distinction during the annual ribbon ceremony on Friday 25 April, the day before King's Day.

Van Geest is a leading scholar in the field of theology and church history, known in particular for his expertise in early Christianity and medieval theology. He has written extensively on the ideas of Augustine of Hippo, early Christian spirituality and the development of Christian doctrine. His research often focuses on the intersections between theology, philosophy and historical contexts. Van Geest has held various academic positions, including a professorship in church history and history of theology at Tilburg University. In 2020, Van Geest was the first Dutch person to be appointed to the prestigious Pontifical Theological Academy in Rome. In 2021, he was appointed a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In addition to his scientific achievements, he has also received recognition in the form of an ecclesiastical distinction. He recently published an impressive encyclopedia on Christianity, which he and several co-editors were able to personally present to Pope Francis.
