Growing bigger! A real university class for children by Professor Vincent Jaddoe

A real university college for children at Erasmus Medical Center

On June 14th, five different 8th-grade classes from Rotterdam were invited by the Academic Outreach Programme to attend a real university lecture. The lecture was given by Professor Vincent Jaddoe, a pediatrician at the Erasmus MC - Sophia Children's Hospital.

In the first part of the lecture, Professor Jaddoe talked about his work in the hospital and explained how children grow. The children had many questions, and Professor Jaddoe took the time to answer each and every one of them. During the second part of the lecture, Professor Jaddoe explained what happens to the human body during exercise. The short quizzes throughout the lecture with questions about the human body made the day interactive and fun for the children. The lecture concluded with an assignment: the children were challenged to conduct their own research at home on the way people around them grow. After the lecture, the children were given a tour of the hospital. Afterwards, they returned to school, having thoroughly enjoyed their experience.

The class at the Erasmus MC hospital was an inspiring morning for the 8th-grade pupils. They gained insights into the work of a pediatrician and learned about their own development. It was a day filled with fun, learning, and discovery, which hopefully will have a lasting impact on their future interests. The AOP is thankful to Professor Jaddoe for the informative and enjoyable class!
