Publication trend: Dutch economists publish less, but better
For the first time in years, Dutch economists are publishing fewer articles: 5,180 between 2014-2018 compared to 5,275 between 2013-2017. That is a decrease of almost two percent, while the number of academic economists continues to grow. The good news is that the impact of publications is increasing. The article influence score (AIS) of the average Dutch economic publication rose by almost five percent from 0.752 to 0.788. Because of this increase in impact, the total impact - number of articles times score per article - of Dutch economists has increased by almost three percent. We can see this improvement in impact per article, combined with a lower number of published articles, on all fronts. For each institution, the impact per published article is higher in the 2019 edition compared to the 2018 list. with Utrecht University as a positive outlier (+12 percent). Only the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and the University of Groningen (RUG) have more publications in the top 2019 than in the top 2018.
