From May 22nd - 25th the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication is hosting the international conference: River Societies: Old Problems, New Solutions: A Comparative Reflection on the Rhine and the Yangtze Rivers.
The conference concerns the historical, sociological and cultural comparison of the Rhine and Yangtze rivers.
At the heart of this conference lies the cooperation between Dutch (Rotterdam, Leiden), German (Frankfurt) and Chinese universities (Fudan University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences), many of which are partner universities of the EUR.
When the first meeting in Shanghai in October 2017 turned out to be incredibly successful, revealing great similar academic interests between Rhine and Yangtze scholars and comparable problems, the idea of a second conference came up.
This time, the talks and discussions have been grouped into specific themes in order to explore more in-depth solutions to common obstacles. The themes are Economic/business aspects, Labour/Social History, Cultural/religious aspects, Political/juridical aspects, Environmental aspects.
The conference is one of the preparation steps for the Rotterdam-delegation trip to Shanghai, on the occassion of the 40 years anniversary of Sister-City relation between Rotterdam and Shanghai. Erasmus University China Center (EUCC) coordinates the trip, which will take place from 11 – 14 June.
