Award giving during Christmas reception Erasmus School of Economics

During a special awards presentation ceremony as part of the Christmas reception on Tuesday 19 December 2017, the management team of Erasmus School of Economics expressed its appreciation towards several faculty members by rewarding the following persons as Top Talent Researcher for their excellent research performance: Andreas Alfons, Aleksandar Andonov, Jan Heufer and Olivier Marie.

New this year was the Educational Innovation Award. A jury, consisting of both staff members and students, selected Kevin Dalmeijer as winner of this award for the introduction of the digital grading tool ANS. First runner up was Omar Rickets for the introduction of the Traintool app in skills education. Paul Bouman and Kim Schouten won the third prize for redesigning the bachelor course ICT.

This years’ Societal Impact Award was granted to Frank van Oort who evaluated the consequences of Brexit. Brexit is probably one of the topics that has been discussed most across the globe this year. In order to better understand the consequences of Brexit for the UK regions, the British government has asked a consortium, including Frank van Oort, who is Professor of regional and urban economics at the department of applied economics and academic director of IHS, for an evaluation. This is just one of many more examples of the societal impact of Frank’s research.

Head of the Dean’s Office, Margaretha Buurman, won the Support award. After a career as a researcher and policy advisor, she started her PhD research at Erasmus School of Economics in 2007. After a successful defence of her dissertation in January 2011, she held the position of Deputy Director of SEOR, a research agency that operates under the umbrella of Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2012, she succeeded Sascha Krijger as Head of the Dean’s Office at Erasmus School of Economics. She has done an excellent job coordinating the Dean’s Office, distinguishing herself by delivering high quality work and her very pleasant personality. She will transfer to VU University in January 2018, to work as Director of Operations at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Last but not least, the Dean’s award was presented to the director of the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship (ECE), Martin Luxemburg, and his team. Although their history is reasonably short, ECE managed to put themselves in the very heart of young entrepreneurial activities in Rotterdam. Their campus at the Rotterdam Science Tower on the west side of Rotterdam is really a vibrant place for the young and old, and the latter category is represented, quite often, by alumni from Erasmus School of Economics. ECE successfully connects students of Erasmus School of Economics with alumni in a very enthusiastic and stimulating environment.
