Alberto Quintavalla receives prestigious KNAW Early Career Award

Alberto Quintavalla

Alberto Quintavalla, assistant professor of Innovation of Public Law at Erasmus School of Law and co-director of the Erasmus Centre of Law and Digitalisation, is one of the twelve researchers who has been awarded the Early Career Award by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). This award recognizes Quintavalla’s innovative and original research and stimulates the further development of his academic career.

Established in 2019, the KNAW Early Career Award recognizes exceptional researchers who demonstrate, at the early stages of their academic careers, the potential for developing and pursuing innovative and original research ideas. A maximum of twelve awards are presented annually, with a maximum of three awards in each of the four academic domains. Laureates each receive a unique work of art and a sum of € 15,000 to be used at their discretion for the benefit of their own research career.

Research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, human rights and environment

Quintavalla has been involved in prominent research at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), human rights and environment, exploring how AI applications affect a vast array of human rights as well as environmental protection. He has also conducted research on the interplay between AI and the transition to a digital and sustainable economy in the context of EU law. In short, Quintavalla attempts to link strands of scholarship that have been previously treated as isolated.

Quintavalla’s work has been recognized through other awards. For instance, in 2021, he received the New Voices prize for an article published in the European Journal of Legal Studies. He also knows how to convey his insights in an accessible manner, which makes Quintavalla's work of great value to both academics and practitioners.

Quintavalla responds to the prize: “Of course, I am honoured and glad to receive this award because it testifies to an appreciation of the work I have been conducting over the past years by myself as well as together with other colleagues. Moreover, I could use the funding received to further develop my research focus by gathering new insights from actively engaging with societal actors”.
