Inclusion by Design: Survey Your Syllabus and Course Design

A broader perspective on inclusion in the actual teaching practice
A man and a woman designing

This survey tool was designed for teachers to examine their syllabus and course design to get a broader perspective on inclusion in the actual teaching practices.

The tool contains a worksheet which is organized in three sections. Each section poses some reflective questions. In each section, you summarize your thoughts quantitatively, using the five-point scales provided. In addition, you can write short explanatory notes for each question that provide examples and/or describe why you selected a particular score. Following sections are covered in the survey:

1. The context and design of your course.

2. The “text” of your syllabus and course design.

3. And the subtext of your syllabus.

  • The primary objective of the curriculum scan is to allow educators to look critically at the status of the curriculum using the findings of the survey and see what is present, what is missing, and which areas need more attention in case of curriculum redesigning.
  • With this tool, you can survey to what extent a study programme in its current form provides inclusive teaching, reflect with the teaching staff on the results of the survey and work on ideas to improve the inclusivity and accessibility of the curriculum.

This survey is developed by Ed Brantmeie (James Madison University), Andreas Broscheid (James Madison University) and Carl S. Moore (University of the District of Columbia). Download the worksheet here.
