F.A.I.R. Assessment Guide

Four guiding principles of fair and equitable grading and assessment
Woman performing in a written assessment.

Assessment practices must reflect the needs of the diverse student population. Besides looking for innovation in assessment, it is also important that teachers follow an equitable and inclusive approach. F.A.I.R (Flexible, Accurate, Inviting, Responsible) assessment guide proposes four guiding principles of fair and equitable grading and assessment.

The guide explains the four guiding principles in terms of assessment. This is followed by some reflective questions per principle to further guide the assessment. The guide also has literature related to every principle separately.

  • As an educator, it is important to reflect on the question of what makes an assessment fair or unfair for students? The F.A.I.R assessment guide helps teachers to follow some basic principles to ensure that the assessment methods used are fair and equitable to all students.
  • The guide also helps teachers in making the assessment flexible to suits the needs of diverse students, ensures that the assessment is in line with the learning objectives, feedback is constructive and motivating and is consciously responsible enough to dismantle rigid structures of bias in the grading system.

The guide was developed by Fanny Passeport (Education Developer, ErasmusX) and Aki Negate (Student Assistant, ErasmusX) together with Marijn van den Doel (Learning Innovation Consultant, RSM)
