Fascism. Most thought it to be an ideology emblematic of the first half of the 20th century. With the current emergence and success of many radical rightwing parties, however, it seems to be making a resurgence. Is this really the case or has fascism just become a buzz word? What is it really, can it truly be defined? And: Does it still play a role in current times?

During What The Fascism? historian dr. Daniel Knegt will explain all there is to know about the infamous ideology. From its origins in the early 20th century and the World War it led to, to its downfall and the influence it has on the world today. How do democracies turn authoritarian? What can we learn from fascism’s past great appeal and great defeat? And is a new fascism out of the question, or a bitter reality?

Dr. Daniel Knegt is lecturer in modern history at the history department of the University of Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD at the European University Institute in Florence with research on fascism and is the author of the pocketbook ‘Fascisme’ in the series ‘Elementaire Deeltjes’.
