On May 16 the new museum Fenix will open its doors on Katendrecht. It was from the quays around this warehouse that over three million emigrants boarded ships bound for destinations such as America and Canada from the late 19th century, including notable figures such as Albert Einstein, Willem de Kooning, and Max Beckmann. The departure and arrival of people made Rotterdam the city it is today, one shaped by the more than 170 nationalities of its inhabitants.

Fenix gives space to more than a hundred artists, from all continents, who show that migration is timeless and universal. Among them are Rineke Dijkstra, Shilpa Gupta and Yinka Shonibare on view but also a new portrait of Erasmus by Hans Holbein. In addition to the international art collection, The Suitcase Maze and the documentary photo exhibition The Family of Migrants will soon be on display. The largest work of art and the eye-catcher of Fenix is the Tornado. A double twisted staircase in the heart of the building that opens onto a panoramic deck designed by MAD Architects.

We'll take you through some highlights from the exhibitions for an hour, then you're free to see the rest on your own and, of course, climb the Tornado!

The tour will be English spoken and only accessible for EUR-students.
