Now on display at the Erasmus Gallery on Campus Woudestein: SPEL, a solo exhibition by Dutch artist Sigrid Calon. Sigrid Calon (1969) has developed her own visual language over the years. She analyses forms and patterns from various techniques and crafts, from embroidery to computer processes. She draws her inspiration from structures, textile materials & techniques.
A play of colours and shapes
Calon's work stands alone and is created through experiments; through rearrangement and play. For that 'play', she sets her own rules and creates her own frameworks. From there, Calon constantly re-examines the power of colour and form. About its use, she says: 'My work revolves around colour, the power of colour, the surprise of colour, combinations with colour, emotion of colour. Besides colour, form is also an important element, it's about the right combination and balance'.

Woven grids
Calon aims for an autonomous image with a strong power of expression; 'preferably one that continues to fascinate, even if you don't know exactly why'. Alongside other work, this exhibition features forty Riso prints. These prints are the designs of Calon's monumental installation 'WOVEN GRIDS series SC_1' (2022). This installation, which consists of forty textile works measuring 65 x 65 cm, executed in Jacquard fabric, wool & trevira, was acquired for the EUR Art Collection and will be installed at the university during 2023.
