On Friday 21 June 2024, T. Wu will defend the doctoral thesis titled: ‘Body Composition, Physical Activity and Adolescent Respiratory Health: The Generation R Study‘.

Brief summary of the doctoral thesis:

In this thesis, we examined the hypothesis that body composition in adolescents can be measured accurately and efficiently by an automated deep learning-based method using Dixon MRI acquisitions, and that the adolescents with less physical activity and longer screen time have an adverse body composition, which subsequently resulted in lower obstructive lung function and small airway measures, not in altered risk for asthma. By integrating lifestyle intervention programs, educational and health institutions may promote physical activity and reduce screen time during adolescence to optimize body composition, and therefore benefit respiratory health. The studies presented in this thesis used data from the Generation R Study, a population-based cohort study in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
