Summary:

The number of cardiac patients with obesity is increasing worldwide. Patients with obesity start cardiac rehabilitation programs with a poorer cardiovascular profile and lower physical fitness levels than patients without obesity. In our research, we also observed a less physically active lifestyle in patients with obesity compared to patients without obesity starting cardiac rehabilitation, which was not compensated during standard cardiac rehabilitation. We also investigated the added value of a new cardiac rehabilitation program which was especially designed for patients with obesity. Results on the short term on body weight and physical activity were promising, but we not observed on the long term. Patients with obesity also experience fatigue often after completing cardiac rehabilitation. We advise to redesign the program to be able to extend short-term effects.
