Below is a brief summary about the dissertation:
Since November 25, 1975, the South American country of Suriname became an independent republic after separating from its former colonizer, the Netherlands. The constitution of the young republic was hastily drafted in 1975. Over a period of more than 25 years, the Surinamese people developed their constitutional framework for democracy, which was later added to the current constitution. According to Dr. Jules Sedney, former Minister of General Affairs and Prime Minister of Suriname, the Surinamese people's views on democracy have evolved over time to meet the needs and aspirations of the Surinamese citizens. These views are part of Suriname's political heritage. To test this, this study examines the presence and development of various democracy ideals, during the period 1975 - 2020.
