Brief summary:
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated poly(radiculo)neuropathy wit rapidly progressive symmetrical weakness of the limbs. About 25% of GBS patients develop respiratory insufficiency and needs mechanical ventilation on an ICU. The most well-known trigger of GBS is an antecedent infection. GBS is a heterogeneous disorder regarding clinical symptoms, course of the disease and outcome. Better understanding of the factors that determine the diversity of GBS, could help to personalize the treatment and improve care of GBS patients. In this thesis we aimed to describe the clinical heterogeneity and geographical variation of GBS. We describe the prognosis of the most severely affected GBS patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation. We report the mortality rate of GBS and the risk factors of death in GBS. As last we reported the results of a new treatment strategy for GBS patients with a poor prognosis. Some of the studies in this thesis are based on the results of the ‘International GBS Outcome Study’ (IGOS). IGOS is a prospective, observational, multicenter, cohort study on GBS in which patients were included from 21 different countries, across five continents. At this moment the IGOS is the largest study on GBS.
