OUTSIDER ART in Erasmus Gallery

On 28 March 2019, Erasmus MC chief executive Ernst Kuipers will give the first Lapré lecture at campus Woudestein of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). The lecture is organized by the Erasmus Centrum voor Zorgbestuur together with the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management. This biennial lecture on the specificity of governing in healthcare is made possible by co-founder Ruud Lapré. In line with Ruud Lapré's passion, the program also focuses on art. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Outsider Art Museum (OAM) the EUR is organizing the exhibition OUTSIDER ART IN ERASMUS GALLERY at campus Woudestein from March 19th until May 31th.

The English term Outsider Art originated from the concept Art Brut (raw art), launched by the French artist Jean Dubuffet. The OAM describes Outsider Art as; outside the art (historical) canon, a personal idiom of the artist, independent of dominant trends, preferences or fashions in the arts. Outsider Art questions the classifications, currents, and directions used in the established arts. The oeuvres of Outsider Art artists are often considered authentic, fascinating and inspiring to fellow artists and an increasing audience.

Thanks to a generous, long-term donation, the OAM was able to set up the Lapré-Van Achter fund. The fund is used to purchase relevant current Outsider Art pieces.

Unpolished works

Some thirty unique, disarming, surprising, unpolished works from the collection of the OAM will be on display in the Erasmus Gallery, including works by Outsider Art artists living and working in the Netherlands; Peter Beers, Jefke Dijkstra, Mies van der Perk, Lionel Plak, Jeroen Pomp, Coen Ringeling and Desmond Tjon A Koy. And, current work by the foreign Outsider Art artists; Aradne (South Africa), Yi Fan (China), Masayoshi Hanawa (Japan), Zhou Huiming (China), Davood Koochaki (Iran), Richard C. Smith (UK) and Kenneth Rasmussen (Denmark).
