Prof. Tineke Abma
Prof. dr. Tineke A. Abma has been director of Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing since 1 December 2019. For more than 25 years, she has been conducting research on topics touching on ageing, such as patient and citizen participation, long-term care, ethics and diversity. Taking the perspective of older people themselves as a starting point and keeping an eye on the differences between people is both her personal motivation and the common thread in Leyden Academy's research and activities.
From 2010 till 2021 Tineke was professor of Participation & Diversity at Amsterdam UMC. Tineke has been endowed professor of Elder Participation at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (PHEG) at Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) since July 2021. On 1 September 2024, Tineke was also appointed endowed professor of Art and Care at Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Dr. Cynthia Liem
Dr Cynthia C. S. Liem MMus is an Associate Professor in the Multimedia Computing Group of Delft University of Technology, a professionally trained concert pianist, and a current member of the Dutch Young Academy. Her research interests are in trustworthy and responsible AI; here, she especially focuses on techniques for perspective-broadening (make people discover new interests and content which would not trivially be retrieved), and questions of validation and validity in data-driven decision-making.
After starting in music information retrieval, today, her research considers broader public-interest domains with high societal impact. Here, she has e.g. done interdisciplinary research with organizational psychologists on machine learning (im)possibilities in the context of fair hiring. Furthermore, she actively engages with relevant stakeholders beyond the academic circle, such as investigative journalists (she e.g. was the first technical commentor on the Dutch childcare benefit scandal in the Trouw newspaper), and organizations that seek to implement responsible AI practice themselves (e.g. as independent director to DUO's investigation into possible algorithmic discrimination). This work has broadly been recognized, with her receiving both the Women in AI Netherlands Diversity Leader Award and the Harper's Bazaar Women of the Year Dyson Pioneer Award in 2024.
Panel
The talks by Tineke and Cynthia will be followed by a panel discussion with EUR students and Tineke and Cynthia on art, science, AI, health and the position of women in academia.
