Caring for health system preparedness and resilience in the Caribbean Netherlands

Bonaire yellow house

Runtime: January 2024 – November 2024
Funder: ZonMw

Project description

The necessity of adequate disaster and crisis preparedness in healthcare is high on the agenda in the European Netherlands. That does not, however, hold equally true for the Caribbean Netherlands, even though the pandemic highlighted the vulnerable nature of this region and its dependence on collaboration with partners in the region and European Netherlands. Further impetus is provided by the climate crisis: the first Dutch hospital which is likely to flood due to the climate crisis is located on Bonaire. With our project, we seek to provide an important fundament for the resilience and preparedness of healthcare in Caribbean Netherlands. Thus, we will use qualitative research methods to map what risks are deemed most pertinent by healthcare actors in the Caribbean Netherlands and what preparedness efforts are currently ongoing. Our project will contribute to a risk profile for healthcare in the Caribbean Netherlands and thereby improves the accessibility and quality of care for all people in the region.
