In February, the Erasmus School of Social Sciences and Humanities hosted its annual EGSH PhD Excellence Awards ceremony. These Graduate School Awards for PhD Excellence are awarded yearly to further stimulate and reward PhD research. During this event, a total of eight awards in different categories were handed out – of which two went to researchers of Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM).
Chiara Carboni, a PhD candidate at Medical Delta/ESHPM, was awarded Best Article 2021. She was lauded for her “perfectly done interdisciplinary literature review” that was “well written and structured and was published in a prestigious journal” and her “intellectually extremely challenging and brave” use of cognitive metaphors. Furthermore, Chiara was congratulated on her exceptional and successful effort to combine medicine, science and technology studies, and sociology, to understand the digitisation of health care.
The other award was received by Dr. Hester van de Bovenkamp, an Associate Professor in the Healthcare Governance discipline at ESHPM. She was awarded the title of Best Supervisor 2021. Although there were fourteen nominees in total, Hester’s nomination especially stood out. She was nominated by five of her PhD candidates. They considered her deserving of the award because she has “perfectly mastered the balancing acts needed to let her students flourish.” According to them, Hester gives them freedom and encouragement to follow their own PhD path; she strikes a balance between professional encouragement en reducing stress levels; she seems very good at “making big things seems small”. In sum, they say, “Hester is a wonderful colleague and creates a very safe environment for her PhD students to learn how to perform their own balancing acts (for instance between work, hobbies and family life). We think that this disposition ‘to care’ is the bedrock that makes Hester such a good supervisor.”
