To finance this project, entitled Empowering young men in their role as a father in the case of unintended pregnancy, they received funding from ZonMw. Their research team will be joined by Prof. Dr. Anna Nieboer, Prof. Dr. Roland Bal, and a yet-to-be-selected PhD student.
Unintended pregnancies, especially among adolescents, may lead to future vulnerable parenthood. Research in this area has mainly focused on mothers, with the role of fathers receiving little attention so far. Therefore, this project aims to gain more insights into how young (future) fathers (aged 16 to 25) can be empowered in taking up their new role with the assistance of their relatives and involved (maternal) health professionals.
Through a mix-methods approach, the research team will obtain insights into the perspectives of young men – who either are fathers or will become one following an unintended pregnancy – as well as their relatives and healthcare professionals. To achieve this, semi-structured interviews, a survey, and focus groups will be performed.
The research team expects that through an exchange of knowledge their research will directly contribute to support young men, their relatives, and health professionals involved in this project. The project will furthermore contribute to intervention development by making recommendations on how an intervention that meets the needs of young men could be realised as well as on how healthcare professionals could assist young men in their role as a father.
