PH (Phuong Hoan) Le, MSC MA

Biography

Phuong Hoan Le is a lecturer and PhD candidate at the Department of Media and Communication. One half of her time is devoted to teaching in the International Bachelor in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and the Premaster Media & Business programmes. The other half is dedicated to her PhD research.

Freelancers, independent contracters, Airbnb hosts, Amazon Mechanical Turkers, Uber drivers, Deliveroo food deliverers, and many more gig workers make up a growing proportion of economies worldwide. In her PhD project supervised by dr. Vidhi Chaudhridr. Yijing Wang, and prof. dr. Susanne Janssen, Hoan investigates if and how gig workers identify with an organization and other loci at work, how they fulfil their need for belongingness to something larger than themselves, and the role of social media and communities herein.

As active member of the Platform Labor Group and co-founder of Responsible Organizations: Communication, Change and Society (ROCCS), she regular organizes research meetings and guest lectures. Prior to this, she represented PhDs as member of the PhD Council of Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities, coordinated the ESHCC PhD Club blog, and helped bridge the gap between scientists and the broader public with the Wetenschapscafé committee of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Hoan has a BA degree with honours in the Media & Culture track of History, a cum laude MA degree in the Media & Business track of Media Studies, and a MSc degree in Business Administration with the EUR Excellence Scholarship.

Prior to joining this department in 2018, Hoan has been a lecturer at the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam and was elected Student and Early Career Representative (two-year term, 2017-2018) of the Public Relations Division of the International Communication Association (ICA). She provided guest lectures at vocational universities and social selling workshops at Hewlett Packard Enterprise and other technology companies.
