Last weekend, the television football channel ESPN addressed the topic of racism in football. They also asked Endowed Professor Jacco van Sterkenburg (department of Media & Communication at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication) to reflect on diverse aspects related to the problem of racism in football. In video and text, he reflects on the limited diversity in football coaching and governance.
"The coaches and managers are not diverse in the Netherlands. The reasons for this are diverse. An important example that we often hear, is that it is important in football to get into the right networks. These networks are very white. People from other ethnic backgrounds find it hard to get into these networks. The coaching and the management of football remains a very white matter."
