Sandrina Bokhorst studied History at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication from 1981 to 1988. Her fascination for history already started at a young age – she read books before they entered the school library, she enjoyed giving lengthy presentations in school, and she talked often about history subjects with her parents. The History programme in Rotterdam appealed to her most, as it offered a modern way of studying history. It classified history by society type, instead of the usual classification of history by time period.
During her studies, Sandrina learned to look at historical issues from a variety of perspectives. “When you unleash different perspectives on history, you get different stories and therefore different insights”, states Sandrina. This idea forms the basis of her recently published book: Spiegels van Rome: gids in zeven eeuwig actuele thema’s (Mirrors of Rome: guide in seven current themes). The book is a thematic guide that, through monuments, characters and stories, lets you discover an ancient Rome that is recognisable and relevant for our time. This way, Sandrina not only tries to make history relevant (again), but also shows how history can still inspire us today.
We talked with Sandrina about how her passion for history, the city of Rome and storytelling all come together in her book.
