AI and assessment

Introduction

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, like ChatGPT, is transforming education and exposing vulnerabilities in traditional assessment methods. These tools challenge traditional methods of assessment and raise questions about, reliability, validity, academic integrity. As a teacher, knowing when and how to integrate GenAI—or deliberately limit its influence—has become a essential skill.

In this MicroLab, we will explore the role of GenAI throughout the assessment cycle, with a particular focus on the design and construct phase. We will examine its implications for validity, reliability, and ethical considerations, helping you navigate the opportunities and challenges GenAI presents.

Next to that, you will actively work on your own course assessments and leave with concrete outcomes that you can apply immediately. By critically reflecting on your practices this session will support you to adapt your assessments to ensure they remain future-proof, valid and reliable in the age of GenAI.

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is designed for university teachers who are interested in learning more about the impact of GenAI on assessment. Participants are expected to have a foundational understanding of assessment design and construction principles. Prior completion of a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO) or Basic Examination Qualification (BEQ/BKE) is not mandatory. However, if candidates have not completed these qualifications, they are advised to complete a short e-learning module to familiarize themselves with concepts from these programs.

Content, form and time investment

This MicroLab has a blended set-up; you start with an online preparation in Canvas. In this four-hour session, we will explore GenAI’s role in assessment, focusing primarily on (re)designing assessment plans and making adjustments in constructing your assessment, while also considering the broader impact of these changes on the rest of the assessment cycle.

To make the most of our time together, please ensure you complete the preparatory assignments. During the session, we will build upon these assignments to deepen your understanding. The total time investment is approximately 6-8 hours (preparation + MicroLab session).

Earn an Edubadge
