Jack Vromen has received an individual NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies) fellowship for 5 months (1 September 2020 till 1 February 2021) to complete his book ‘What ought to count: Philosophical Reflections on Behavioral Welfare Economics’.
Short summary of the book: Insights obtained in behavioral economics have casted doubt on the presupposition in standard welfare economics that individuals’ preferences, as they are revealed in their choices, are reliable indicators of their well-being.The book argues that what is ultimately at stake is the normative issue of what ought to count in social welfare assessments and that the standard preference-based account cannot be sustained.
