Pre-master student Arts and Culture Studies

After finishing my bachelor in Illustration, I knew I wanted to expand my theoretical understanding of the arts further. I was quite worried because I didn’t have the credentials to start a master programme at a university, but my student advisor told me about the pre-master at Erasmus University Rotterdam. After visiting the Master Open Day, I realised this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass, and I signed up!

Support from teachers and peers

At first, I was nervous that I might not be able to keep up with all the course material. Luckily, there was plenty of support from both the teachers and my peers. The classes are specifically tailored to those who have little to no familiarity with academic research, so whatever experience I lacked was soon made up for. Within a year I learned the fundamentals of sociological theory and methodology in relation to the art world.

tight knit and diverse

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about the pre-master is the small-scale and personal nature of the programme. It is very inspiring to be part of a tight knit and diverse group of people who are eager to learn. The shared pursuit of a same goal creates a unique kind of connection and a pleasant study environment.

I have learned many interesting things and met many wonderful people in the past year. I haven’t regretted my choice of doing the pre-master once. It provided me with all the essential skills I needed, giving me a strong foundation from which I can now confidently continue my pursuit of a master specialisation!
