Artificial Intelligence continues to grow as a topic of interest, both in research and in practice, but critical discussions have also increased. Accidents with self-driving cars, discrimination in decision-making processes (for example: government benefits, recruitment and hiring processes, insurance applications, and many more) rightfully raise critical discussions on the widespread implementation of AI solutions. The opacity and inexplainability of AI (‘black box AI’) add to these concerns.
Most of AI research focuses on technological advances of AI innovations or on the effects such innovations (might) have on society or people. In this research project, I will study how communication on technological innovations might affect AI development processes. I will focus on communication practices amongst AI developers, as well as on the larger societal discussions on ethical, trustworthy, and accountable AI.
