On 16 April 2022, a new Fleddypalooza finally took place at the Ancienne Belgique venue in Brussels. This edition became the groundbreaking first metal show at this legendary venue to open with a panel conversation. Its central question: what are the state and future of the Belgian metal scene? Can we even speak of a Belgian scene? And finally, what comprises a sustainable future for Belgian metal? The panel was chaired by cultural and metal scholar Didier Goossens (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) en de International Society for Metal Music Studies (ISMMS)).

Didier Goossens invited four professional guests from the Belgian metal industry to discuss these questions. They are: Ilse Bosch (GRIMM Gent, Asgaard, Alcatraz Open Air, VIERNULVIER), Didier Gosset (IMPALA, Fédération des Festivals de Musique Wallonie-Bruxelles, Le Vecteur, Black Basset Records), Nele Buys (Consouling Sounds) and Andries Beckers (Welcome to the AA, Staalhard).

This panel was conducted in English and recorded for research and distribution purposes. The organizers and panelists hope to provide more space and recognition for the wealth and impact of Belgian metal in both professional and academic environments.

Concert promotor Tarik Vanrompaey adds: “The AB is proud to open its stage to this panel discussion. Reflection in the music and cultural industries is crucial: we learn a lot from reflection on our activities and future ventures. We can only encourage that researchers like Didier help to hold a mirror to ourselves!”
