As part of the Makers Programma, dr. Trilce Navarrete Hernandez (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication) investigated the reuse of open data. The Makers Programma is an initiative of the Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed (NDE) en Het Nieuwe Instituut and focuses on the potential of creatively reusing digital heritage.
The – yet to be published – report of the investigation is geared at exploring the (re)use of digital data in collaboration with the creative industries. Especially in the contemporary (post-)pandemic period, the use of digital technologies has been a focal point of attention in terms of both its opportunities as its challenges. Based on the voices of about 100 makers that shared their process of creations, their needs and their challenges, the report offers practical recommendations about how to stimulate the reuse of heritage materials.
On a personal note, Trilce says she is happy to make recommendations that will be considered on a national level by the NDE, the Stimuleringsfonds (a fund for design, architecture, digital culture and all cross-overs) and the Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (the ministry of education, culture and science). She is glad that the topic gets much attention and contends that reuse of collections increases the value of national heritage repository, which in turn stimulates further reuse and leads to further creative stimulation across al sectors. The creative industries can only contribute to the national economy when a strong infrastructure is in place to enable their work.
The full report will soon be published.
