Second Research Excellence Initiative Grant

A joint research project from research centres ERMeCC and CHC has been awarded a Research Excellence Initiative (REI) grant 2014.

ERMeCC proudly congratulates Maria Grever, Stijn Reijnders, Jeroen Jansz, Kees Ribbens, and Francisca de Jong with the grant on their research proposal War! Popular Culture and European Heritage of Major Armed Conflicts. Their proposal was selected from 21 research proposals and received a large grant, financed by the board of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

War! Popular Culture and European Heritage of Major Armed Conflict

Supported by Erasmus Studio (ES), the institute for e-research at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocides Studies, this proposed research combines expertise of both ERMeCC and CHC (Centre for Historical Culture). The research aims to investigate the European Heritage of major armed conflicts and especially the contrast between the institutionalised commemorative practices and the popular initiatives. This research consists of three projects:

  • Game set in war-devastated urban landscapes, 1939-present. (Kees Ribbens, Jeroen Jansz)
  • War sites and cemeteries (Stijn Reijnders, Maria Grever)
  • Museums and online testimonies on war and liberation (Francisca de Jong)

Second REI grant for ERMeCC

This is the second REI grant that has been awarded to ERMeCC researchers. In 2013 ERMeCC was among the first top groups to receive a REI grant for the project Transformations in the Production and Consumption of Media and Culture led by Susanne Janssen.
