Phuong Hoan Le unravels the bond among gig workers

Hoàn will speak at the next CeCoR Research Meeting at UvA

Phuong Hoan Le was invited to the next CeCoR Research Meeting at the University of Amsterdam, on 24 March (16:00-17:00hrs). Her talk, “Social Identification in the Gig Economy: On the Psychological and Communicative Bond Among Gig Workers”, is highly interesting for anyone interested in issues related to the digital society, methods, and social processes. Cutting-edge Communication Research @ ASCoR (CeCoR @ ASCoR) is a series of online research talks that aims to offer external early career researchers a welcoming and stimulating forum for presenting and discussing research innovations in Communication Science.

The changing nature of societies, organizations, and work has put several organizational phenomena into question, including how workers may feel a sense of connection or belongingness at work. Gig work involves short-term paid tasks or projects without a long-term contract, such as independent contracting work, hosting via Airbnb, Uber and Lyft driving, Deliveroo food delivery, and “clickwork” at Amazon Mechanical Turk. As such, gig work represents one of the extremes in terms of temporary work.

Based on a literature review, Phuong Hoan Le will first explain why the more established construct of ‘organizational identification’ is less or not applicable to gig workers. She will then share how social identity theory can nonetheless help understand how gig workers make sense of their precarious work world, who they are as individuals despite the changing jobs and multiple work identities, and how they may reduce their social and existential anxiety. A social identity approach may also explain why many are willing to provide free labour in (online) communities in the form of offering work support, career advice, and skill training.
