Meet the new PhD candidates who recently joined! Today: Yingting Peng

Yingting is a PhD Candidate at ESHCC and started her research in cultural economics. She has been a PhD candidate from the Department of Arts and Culture Studies at ESHCC since February 2024. Her research interest includes art finance, the Chinese art market and art investment, Chinese porcelain in particular, and urban sustainable development based on cultural capital. 

Her research interest lies in the cultural economics, which includes art finance, the Chinese art market and its investment, Chinese porcelain in particular, and urban sustainable development based on cultural capital, etc.. Her supervisors are prof.dr. (Filip) FRR Vermeylen, dr. (Ellen) EMMP Loots, and dr. (Yijing) Y Wang.

She started her journey of being an international student in the final year of her undergraduate studies, being an exchange student to the Northumbria University, in the UK, her major was Business with International Management. After that, she obtained her master’s degree with Distinction in International Banking and Finance at the University of Glasgow in 2016. From then on, she was attracted by the Western educational mode, international academic atmosphere and got acquainted with qualitative and quantitative research methods, which laid a foundation for her subsequent academic career. Her interdisciplinary academic background and international experiences have shaped her current research direction.

After graduation, she worked for nearly seven years in China. She taught IELTS writing for more than one year, after which she became a university lecturer teaching finance-related courses and an international educator for five years. Through work experiences, she gained a deeper understanding of being a scholar and herself, leading her to embark on my PhD journey in the Netherlands, a country known for its cultural inclusivity and long financial history.

She come from Jingdezhen, the Capital of Porcelain in China, which is the starting point of the ancient Silk Road where porcelain was exported overseas thousands years ago. It is also where her research journey began. Growing up in a city rich in cultural and historical heritage, influenced by the art of ceramics, she became an art enthusiast, nurturing a strong interest and passion for arts and cultural industry. She can see the values behind artworks, except its economic values, they do bring people spiritual satisfaction and aesthetic enjoyment, which shows its social and cultural values.

She aspire to delve into academia while becoming an ambassador for Chinese ceramic culture, bridging the cultural exchange between China and the world.

In her daily life, she is someone who loves to travel, enjoys the process of cooking and savoring delicious food, and also has a great fondness for dogs.
