Last Friday, ERMeCHS' JIM cluster hosted a panel discussion at the VVOJ Investigative Journalism Conference 2024. Moderated by Mijke Slot and Sergül Nguyen, the panel explored building trust between journalists and their audiences. JIM has since released a podcast delving deeper into this theme.
During the panel, JIM-members Jacco van Sterkenburg, Delia Dumitrica, and Marc Verboord discussed the complexities of trust in the current media landscape, the practices of investigative journalists to build trust and the importance of diversity in newsrooms with Wubby Luyendijk, chef research at NRC, and Kasper Goethals, international investigative journalist at De Standaard. The participants exchanged academic key insights and professional observations and practices, and explored directions for relevant future research.
The Association of Investigative Journalists (VVOJ) organized their yearly Investigative Journalism Conference at De Doelen in Rotterdam for Flemish and Dutch (investigative) journalists. The theme of the conference was ‘Onverschrokken de nieuwe wereld in’ (‘Fearlessly into the new world’), exploring the tools to navigate challenges that modern journalism faces, such as mondial conflicts, new governments, and disinformation.
During the conference, Nadia Mentzel and Alessia Gebauer created the mini-podcast ‘Vol vertrouwen de nieuwe wereld in: Gesprekken over de journalistiek’ (‘With full trust into the new world: Conversations about journalism’). In three episodes (two in Dutch, one in English), the speakers of the panel and Thomas Muntz, editor-in-chief of the investigative journalism platform Investico ‘speed date’ around the topic of trust in journalism.
The series starts off with Marc and Thomas discussing general trust in journalism, followed by a conversation between Delia and Kasper on dealing with sources who may not immediately entrust their stories and sensitive information, and concludes with Jacco and Wubby who talk about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the newsroom for trust in journalism.
