For Dutch people, the 5th of December means one thing: Sinterklaas is coming to your house to bring you gifts! Sinterklaas and his Pieten are a symbol of the Dutch history and a well celebrated holiday. However, in recent years there has been a debate on the appearance of Zwarte Piet.
While Zwarte Piet and the debate around him may be something the Dutch students are used to, this is not the case for International students. Erasmus Magazine spoke with four international students from ESHCC about their first acquaintance with Zwarte Piet.
Some international students were extremely shocked about the tradition, while other students saw it as a unique tradition which unites people.
