Interview with Dr. Simone Driessen

Magali Meijers, first-year IBCoM student and intern at the (online) magazine Linda.nl, wrote a piece about 'cancel culture'. In her article, she interviews Dr. Simone Driessen, who currently researches Harry Potter- and Taylor Swift-fandoms.

“Cancel culture is the phenomenon of a group of people, mostly fans, who disagree with what a public figure has said or done. You can see it as a form of 'calling out'. In other words, you address someone's behavior or remarks because you think it should not be tolerated. ” This is usually done via social media. For example, people post about actions of a person that are not accepted and demand the person to be 'cancelled'. The goal is usually to make it clear that certain behavior or remarks are not socially acceptable, by trying to end someone's career. But is this a new phenomenon? Driessen thinks not. “Cancel culture is a phenomenon that has been around for years. But social media has made it much more visible and it has taken on a more structured form."
