Van Lienden, Longas Luque and van Sterkenburg conduct research into racial stereotypes in sports media and take a special look at sports events that are widely watched worldwide. Their analysis of football commentary in four different countries (The Netherlands, England, Spain and Poland) shows that reporting by predominantly white commentators is still regularly laced with racial stereotypes.
It will be interesting to see how commentators and journalists will report on this super diverse event during these Olympic Games, which feature athletes from over 200 different countries. Potentially, sport and sports media can strengthen the role of sport in fraternizing and bringing people from different backgrounds together.
