Researcher Dillon Heuser, ESHCC alumnus, is featured in an episode of 2Doc Kort about Hoorn, the statue of J.P. Coen and slavery, on NPO2. In the mini-documentary "The city, the statue and the slavery past", he read pieces from his "Research Report on Hoorn's Slavery Past" during a city discussion on the subject.
An "open and broad" city conversation was announced back in June 2020, after riots broke out that month around the statue of VOC governor general J.P. Coen in the city's central square. The statue is seen by opponents as a tribute to a mass murderer. According to the college, the city dialogue should not only be about the statue, but also about issues such as the colonial past, racism, discrimination, and social exclusion. A dialogue was organised on 6 September 2023. This is something the municipality of Hoorn explicitly opts for. The city wants to give space to all perspectives. But in times of polarisation, how do you get past for or against?
Dillon Heuser conducted his research under the supervision of Alex van Stipriaan, professor emeritus of Caribbean history at ESHCC. He took courses from ESHCC professor emeritus Maria Grever and assistant professor Robbert-Jan Adriaansen, among others.
