On Thursday 28 September, the first "Behind The Scenes" event for alumni of the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication took place at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.
From a sketch of the fence of Blijdorp Zoo to a 1908 map of The Hague, to a model of Rotterdam's Markthal; alumni had the unique opportunity to admire some extraordinary works from one of the world's largest architectural collections at the museum's State Archives.
Alumna Jessica Dohmen-Verboom (Media, Culture & Society 2012), Marketing & Communications Officer at the Nieuwe Instituut, warmly welcomed the alumni and gave an introduction about the museum. She also shared some challenges in her communications role at the museum.
After the presentation, the guests were invited to enter the National Collection of Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning, where an enthusiastic archivist showed a design drawing of the Nieuwe Instituut by Jo Coenen and several design drawings of the Peace Palace. He also displayed a utopian map of The Hague by Berlage and utopian sketches of architect W.J. Neutelings.
At the end of the guided tour, the alumni shared some drinks in het Nieuwe Café. We look back on a successful event and hope to announce the location for the next "Behind The Scenes" alumni event soon.

Behind The Scenes
The alumni evening at the Nieuwe Instituut is a first event in a series of "Behind The Scenes" visits that the faculty is organising in 2023/2024. As faculty, we see that our alumni end up in interesting and inspiring (work)places in society. With the "Behind The Scenes" series, we want to open up these workplaces to fellow alumni to show where other alumni end up, to give a unique insight into the ins and outs of an organisation, and to connect ESHCC alumni from different study programmes.
