Dr. Simone Driessen attended the Media in Transition 10 at MIT. This year, the conference focused on Digital Media & Democracy. The session in which Dr. Driessen was presenter and moderator, ‘’The Power of Fandom’’, was widely visited.
Driessen presented her paper ‘’For the Greater Good: Vigilantism in Online Pop Culture Fandoms’’ to a large audience. Henry Jenkins and Roberta Pearson, two key scholars in the field of fan studies, attended this session. Other papers in the panel discussed fan activism related to the series ‘”The 100’’, how adolescents experienced a live-programme regarding Eurovision in Spain, and ‘fan labor’ related to the Otama Game market.
