Article in special journal issue: “Religion, Media, and Materiality"
This special journal issue is the result of the workshop “Religion, Media, and Materiality: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Religious Authority,” which took place in January 2018 at the Center for Religious Studies (CERES) at Ruhr University, Bochum, and was organized by Giulia Evolvi and Jessie Pons. The workshop and the special issue focus on the impact of media on religion, but also on media as an intrinsic part of the religious experience. In particular, we discuss how processes of mediation affect structures and features of contemporary religion, with a focus on religious authority.
The article “Materiality, Authority, and Digital Religion: The Case of a Neo-Pagan Forum” by Giulia Evolvi explores these topics through the case study of a Neo-Pagan website, which illustrates the importance of discussing materiality in studying digital religion.
