What does this study entail?
Digitalisation brings many opportunities, including artificial intelligence (AI), social media platforms, and remote work. Yet digitalisation also bears an unprecedented collection and analysis of personal information, raising global challenges regarding privacy and security. Digital media content can sway elections, incite polarisation, and transform how we interact with our neighbours. Algorithms make decisions in all aspects of our lives but are in turn shaped and configured by diverse human agents.
During the master specialisation Media, Digitalisation & Social Impact you will study the social and ethical side of emerging media technologies and how they impact – and are impacted by - politics, organisations and local contexts. Generative AI like ChatGPT provoke a reconsideration of content ownership and authorship. Easy access to messages and surveillance cameras compels neighbours to report on anything deemed suspicious in their neighbourhood. Location tracking of family and friends has become common practice in ways perceived as both caring and controlling. Health and lifestyle apps provide insights about one’s wellbeing, while provoking their own privacy and ethical concerns. Media, Digitalisation & Social Impact teaches you the academic skills to put these kinds of topics into an impactful societal perspective.
