During the webinar “The Rise of Influencers and Social Media Platforms in Eurasia” we will examine the empowerment of individuals through social media platforms and how this is reshaping the traditional media landscape in the context of China, Greece, India, and Turkey. The panel will consider the opportunities and challenges faced by influencers and societies in this rapidly evolving ecosystem.

This webinar series titled 'Digital Dialogues’ aims to broaden students' perspectives by featuring panel discussions that explore the future of key concepts relevant to higher education. The sessions will bring together experts from both India and the Netherlands, offering a truly global perspective. Each webinar will feature a dynamic panel comprising four panellists and two moderators, with the lineup changing to suit the specific topic under discussion. The panels will include a mix of academicians and domain experts, ensuring a well-rounded exploration of each theme.

Kunal Majumder
Knight-Wallace Fellow, India Representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists
Currently a Knight-Wallace Fellow, Kunāl Majumder serves as the India Representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists. At the CPJ, Kunal documents and researches press freedom issues and advocates for journalists’ safety. He also advises Impulse Model Press Lab, which supports reporters covering human trafficking.
Kunal has held leadership positions in news organizations, including Tehelka, Indian Express Group, Rajasthan Patrika Group and Zee Media Corporation. He also has several awards to his credit including the UNFPA-Laadli Award for Gender Sensitivity and the Statesman Award for Rural Development. His reporting spans politics, business, foreign affairs, human rights, culture and conflict.
Jian LIN
Assistant Professor, School of Journalism and Communication, Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Jian LIN is an assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He researches and writes about platform economy, media industries, and digital cultures in the global Chinese context. He is the author of Chinese Creator Economies: Labour, Subjectivity and the Bilateral Creatives (NYU Press 2023) and Wanghong as Social Media Entertainment (co-authored with David Craig and Stuart Cunningham, Palgrave McMillan 2021). Lin is the cultural commons and book review editor of the European Journal of Cultural Studies, and the associate editor of the journal Communication and the Public.
Dr. Alkim Yalin
Lecturer in Media and Creative Industries, Erasmus University Rotterdam
Dr. Alkim Yalin is a lecturer in Media and Creative Industries at ESHCC (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication), specializing in creator cultures, platform labor, and digital labor. Using a digital ethnographic approach, her current research examines the integration of influencer and e-commerce industries in Turkey with a focus on how this integration transforms digital labor and reinforces precarious working conditions for content creators. Her recent research has been published in Social Media & Society and The Routledge Companion to Advertising and Promotional Culture.
Dr. Alexandre Diallo
Lecturer in Media and Communications, Erasmus University Rotterdam
Dr. Alexandre Diallo is a researcher and lecturer specializing in media representation and online discourses on racism and toxic masculinity. He has published on the reception of TV series and films and is co-editing a book on women’s representation in television. His work also examines the evolving media landscape, digital labor, and social media’s impact on racial identity and empowerment. Dr. Diallo holds a PhD in sociology from the French School for Social Sciences and Paris-Sciences Lettres, a master’s in management from ESCP Europe, and two master’s degrees in economics from Paris 1 Sorbonne and the French School for Social Sciences. He was recently a Visiting Researcher at King’s College London. He serves on the European think tank Sport and Citizenship scientific committee and contributes art reviews to Revue Esprit.

Ex-BBC Journalist Dr. Tilak Jha is currently Associate Professor of Journalism at Times School of Media, Bennett University. He has an MPhil-PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and did his field work as an Asian Future Leaders Scholar at School of Public Affairs, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China between 2014-16. A regular contributor to media and policy debates, his most recent publication includes an edited volume entitled Dynamics of World Politics and 21st Century Asia (2024), Bloomsbury Publishing, ISBN: 9789361313370.
