At the head of the medical faculty is the dean, Prof. Dr. Stefan Sleijfer. The dean is responsible for research and education and is also chairman of the Board of Governors of Erasmus MC.
As of September 1, 2019, Prof. Dr. M.A. (Maarten) Frens has been appointed pro dean of Education. Prof. Frens, under the ultimate responsibility of the dean, is engaged full-time in teaching and training at Erasmus MC.
Stefan Sleijfer
Stefan Sleijfer (1970) studied Medicine at the University of Groningen and obtained his PhD at the same university. At Erasmus MC he trained as an internist-oncologist. Since completing that specialization in 2004, he has worked as an internist-oncologist at Erasmus MC. He was appointed professor in 2011 and head of department in 2013. He was appointed dean and member of the Executive Board of Erasmus MC on September 1, 2021.
Maarten Frens
Maarten Frens is a professor of Systems Physiology in the Department of Neuroscience at Erasmus MC. Between 2011-2013, he was program coordinator of the Bachelor of Medicine in Rotterdam, after which he transferred to Erasmus University College (EUC) in 2013. As (building) dean, he and his team succeeded in making EUC a vibrant and dynamic college and it has now become one of the best university colleges in the Netherlands. He also created new forms of education, educational themes and complete curricula and was closely involved in setting up EUC's talent development program. In 2018, his efforts were awarded the Education Prize of Erasmus University Rotterdam.
