Paul van Geest: Economy requires moderation

Calatrava’s Samuel Beckett Bridge
Paul van Geest

The societies in the West are driven by economic growth and technological progress. Paul van Geest questions whether this system can end poverty and achieve prosperity for all. In the Osservatore Romano, he presents this message to the catholic world.

Rather, he maintains, the vision set out by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum is preferable. It is important to invest in the technology that will enable mankind to live from the flow of life, the sun. Moreover, we should realize that we are part of an ecosystem, part of a world, on which we depend, and that it is not the other way around. And on top of that, not economic growth, but economic moderation and contentment are the way to happiness and prosperity.
