Biography
Matthijs Leendertse has been working as a senior researcher / advisor for TNO Information and Communication Technology, a Dutch R&D organisation, since February 2006. In his work, he develops strategic visions around media, ICT and education for both the private and the public sector. Leendertse’s work is often future oriented and multi-disciplinary, combining the fields of economics & management studies, communication science and policy studies.
He works for a variety of Dutch and international clients, such as the European Commission, the Dutch Education Council, France Telecom, War Child and the Dutch public broadcasters’ organization NPO. Research topics include business modeling for digital media products, the impact of digitization and new technology on media organizations, media policy in an age of rapid changes in the media industry, and the future of ICT-enabled learning. Current projects he is working on include a study on the future of learning in 2025 for the European Commission, and an investigation into possibilities for content owners to generate revenues with hyper-differentiation of media products.
Since 2006, Leendertse is also a lecturer at the Department of Media & Communication at Erasmus University on trends in the media industry and media policy. Previously, he worked as a lecturer and research associate at the University of Amsterdam, Department of Communication Studies/Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR). Before that, he worked as head of research at Van Dusseldorp & Partners, an Amsterdam-based consultancy company focused on new media developments.
He often gives speeches at national and international conferences such as the International Telecommunications Conference 2010 in Tokyo, Japan or the mScapeFest 2009 in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Leendertse is a member of the international advisory board of the International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation. Currently he is finishing his Ph.D. dissertation at ASCoR on the effects of policy measures on the production of digital educational resources. He holds an MA in Communication Studies (2000) from the University of Amsterdam.
