prof.dr. IHA (Ingmar) Franken

Biography

Ingmar Franken is a full professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, within the Clinical Psychology group in the Department of Psychology, Education, and Child Studies. He obtained his PhD in 2003 from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Currently, he serves as the head of the Center for Addiction and Substance Use Research (cesarresearch.nl) in Rotterdam.

His research interests primarily focus on the neurocognitive aspects of addiction and substance abuse. He is dedicated to the "From Lab to Society" research approach, which emphasizes a strong connection between basic experimental research and clinical practice. He has had the privilege of presenting his work at numerous international conferences and has successfully secured both governmental and private funding for his research, including prestigious grants like the VENI and VIDI. Additionally, he has succesfully supervised 24 PhD students so far throughout his career.

He is a member of the editorial boards of Drug and Alcohol Dependence and European Addiction Research, and he reviews for over 60 scientific journals and organizations, including the European Research Council (ERC). He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and serves as the main editor of the Sage Handbook of Addiction Psychology as well as two Dutch handbooks for professionals on Psychopathology and Addiction. He also has a small part-time appointment as therapist at Antes, specializing in addiction treatment.
