dr. (Bilge) B Sahin

Biography

I am an Assistant Professor in Conflict and Peace Studies here at the ISS. My academic work focuses on gender, armed conflict, and security. My areas of expertise encompass the nuanced gender dynamics inherent in armed conflicts, the prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence crimes in conflict, the intricacies of gender dynamics within transitional justice, the pursuit of gendered justice within the realm of international law, and the examination of international developmental policies and their practical implementation especially by women's groups and women civil society organizations in post-conflict societies. My primary geographical focus lies within East Africa, with a substantial body of fieldwork experience in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Additionally, I have cultivated a deep understanding of the broader Middle East and North Africa region, with a particular emphasis on Turkey. My expertise in Turkey extends to critical areas such as the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda and the intricate issues surrounding refugee women.

I received my PhD from SOAS University of London, Department of Development Studies in 2019. Before joining the ISS, I worked as an Assistant Professor at Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University (Turkey), a Research Associate at SOAS University of London (UK), and a Visiting Lecturer at the Social Science University of Ankara (Turkey).
